“Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. Until one night, when her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from work, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word.” Reading those two sentences got me hooked on this book. Smart, suspenseful, and thought provoking. Alicia keeps silent and hides her secret until almost the last page of the book.
I first listened to this book on Audible while driving across the country. Listening to a book while driving is a big issue for me. Some books are great to read but the narrator causes me to swerve off the road and sleep! The two narrators used here, Jack Hawkins and Louise Brealey keep the listener engaged and awake.
Why kill the husband you love and who worships you? Alicia has a perfect life with her husband. They are both artists and financially secure. What we learn through the course of the novel is that not everything is as it seems. Usually I am pretty good at solving the crime before the end of the book but this one kept me guessing until the end. Was it really Alicia? Or was it the person who supposedly hid near her house? And why doesn’t she talk?
This book is Michaelides’ first novel. I look forward to reading his next.
